Şizofreni çok sayıda belirti ve bulgunun biraraya gelmesi ile oluşan bir ruhsal bozukluktur. Gerek belirtilerin çeşitliliği, gerekse farklı ülkelerde farklı psikiyatristlerce değişik şizofreni kavramlarının benimsenmesi geçmişte şizofreniyi tüm psikiyatrik bozukluklar arasında tanımlanması en zor sendrom haline getirmiştir. Bu yazıda son yıllarda şizofreni tanısı için üzerinde en yaygın fikir birliği oluşmuş bulunan tanı ölçütleri tanıtılmış, en çok kullanılan alttiplere değinilmiş, şizofreninin klinik belirti ve bulguları, gidiş ve sonlanışı gözden geçirilmiş, ayırıcı tanıda yer alan diğer durumlar incelenmiştir.

Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that consists of many different signs and symptoms. Because of the variation of the symptoms and the divergent concepts of schizophrenia held in different countries by different psychiatrists, of all the psychiatric disorders, schizophrenia has turned out to be the most difficult syndrome to describe. In this paper, the most widely accepted diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia during recent [year]s have been defined, the most common subtypes have been mentioned, clinical signs and symptoms have been reviewed and other conditions important for differential diagnosis have been examined.
