Strategies that can enhance the therapeutic efficacy of antidepressants include augmentation, switching or combination treatments. The
data on augmentation indicate this approach can be effective in treatment-resistant depression; and lithium, T3, aripiprazole and quetiapine
augmentations are the options having the best supporting evidence. Although there is only limited evidence on the efficacy
of combination strategy, this approach has a common use in daily practice. SSRI+bupropion, venlafaxine+mirtazapine, SSRI+TCA,
TCA+mianserine, SSRI+mirtazapine and SSRI+reboksetine may be the combination options. Switch strategy suffers from the lack of
convincing evidence for efficacy, as well. In this respect, whether switching to a different class of antidepressant is superior to withinclass
option seemes to be uncertain. Similarly, the questions like ?relative superiority of these three strategies over each other? or ?which
patients benefit from which strategy best? have not yet been answered. The data indicate that these strategies have similar efficacy; and
that the higher the degree of treatment resistance is, the less the efficacy of these three strategies tends to be. The need for novel treatment
options and well-conducted studies in the field is obvious.
