A Desperate Cry for Love: The Historical Story for Depression from Ibn-i Sina (Avicenna) to Psychoanalysis
Depression is a mental disorder described since ancient times. However, definitions of depression was discussed and changes from past to present. In the historical process depression has different meanings. Ithe first definition of depression extends back to the Hippocrates period, his oppinion of black bile and 4 elements were held for over thousand [year]s. In the middle ages attributed to evil forces, Aristotle was associated with creativity, Ibn-i Sina called ìiskî disease. Objective, measurable and predictable parameters of positivist science away from the romantic, literary and philosophical definitions of depression. As a result modern psychiatry is discussed the central nervous system function. Drug treatment has been developed in line with the hypothesis of irregularity of biological amines. Black bile was replaced by the hypothesis of serotonin-noradrenaline. World Health Organization (1992) described depression as a mental illness including body, emotion and thoughts and long-term period of melancholy and sadness. The word of depression except in respect of mental illness is also used in different meanings. One reason for confusion in the use of the word of the depression, the meaning of the word stems. Fall down, which means the word depression, describes a level below the usual level of emotion. "Fall down" in a state of that may happen to anyone. Everyone may have symptoms of depression in different shape such as grief, anxiety, unwillingness, feeling of space and indecison. Therefore, the objective definition of depression are discussed in psychiatry and psychology. The dilemmas of normality and illness, creativity and madness is gaining meaning only framework of psychoanalytic developmental theory. Psychoanalysis has provided the opportunity handling a wide sense of depression with its emphasis on the personís subjectivity and uniqueness.
