Müzik beynimizi etkileyerek emosyonel ve fizyolojik tepkiler oluşturan bir işitsel uyarandır. Bireye etki eden gerçek, hayali veya sembolik bir stresör de müzik gibi organizmada tepkiler oluşturan bir çeşit 'uyaran'dır. Bilimsel veriler bize müziğin beynimiz kadar kalbimizi de etkilediğini göstermektedir. Hipotalamusla bağlantılı olarak çalışan otonom sinir sistemi vücudun homeostazisinin korunmasından sorumludur. Sempatik sistem genel olarak organizmayı acil durumlara karşı koruyucu ve uyarıcı bir sistem olarak savaş ya da kaç tepkisinin oluşmasına aracılık eder. Parasempatik sistem ise daha çok organizmanın onarım ve dinlenmesine aracılık eder. Parasempatik aktivite kalp hızını yavaşlattığı, kasılma gücünü azalttığı için daha çok enerji koruyucu bir sistem olarak kabul edilmektedir. Pekçok hastalık, artmış sempatik/azalmış parasempatik aktiviteden kaynaklanan bozulmuş otonom ritm ile ilişkilidir. Stres verici uyaranların oluşturduğu olumsuz etkiler özellikle kalp üzerinde oldukça belirgindir. Müzik uyaranı parasempatik eğilimi artırarak vagal ton ile ilişkili olan Kalp Hızı Değişkenliğine (HRV) ve dikkat işlevlerine olumlu yönde katkı sağlamaktadır.

Music is an auditory stimulus that affects human brain and produces phsyhological and emotional responses. A real, imaginary or symbolic stressor is a kind of stimulus such as the music which is acting to individuals and produces some responses in the organism. Scientific data shows us music is affecting to our hearts as well as our brains. Autonomic nervous system that working in conjunction with the hypothalamus is responsible for maintaining homeostasis of the body. Sympathetic system is in general, protects the organism against emergencies, and mediates the formation of the fight or flight reaction. Parasympathetic system is mediates the repairing and resting of the organism. Parasympathetic activity reduces heart rate, and the strength of contraction, so it is considered an energy protective system. Many diseases is associated with increased sympathetic / decreased parasympathetic activity which resulting impaired autonomic rhythm. The negative effects of stressful stimuli, is quite evident on the heart. Music stimulus increases the parasympathetic tendency, and provides a positive contribution to heart rate variability (HRV) and attention functions which are associated with vagal tone.
