Tamamlanmış intihar nedenlerine yönelik iki türlü araştırma yapılabilmektedir: Epidemiyolojik ve psikolojik otopsi. Psikolojik otopsi yöntemi adli kayıtlar, psikiyatrik ve diğer sağlık bilgileri, kişinin aile ve ilişkide olduğu diğer bireyler ile görüşme sonucunda elde edilen bilgiler ve intihar olayı ile ilgili olası diğer bilgilerin, kişilerin profilini ortaya çıkaracak şekilde birleştirilmesidir. İncelenecek kaynakların içeriğinin yeterliliği ve bilgi alınacak bireylere ulaşabilme, psikolojik otopsi çalışmalarında en önemli yöntemsel sorun olmaktadır. Türkiye'de yapılmış psikolojik otopsi çalışmaları, literatürdeki çalışmalar eşliğinde incelenecektir.

Two kinds of investigations can be done about the reasons of the completed suicides: epidemiologic and psychological autopsy. Psychological autopsy is a method that judicial records, psychiatric and other health attainments, information gathered during talking with person's family and other people related, are joined to find out people's personal profiles. The sufficiency of content of sources that will be examined and the reaching people from whom the information will be gotten, are the most important methodical problems in studies of psychological autopsy. The present psychological autopsy studies in Turkey will be examined with psychological autopsy studies in the literature.
