Hem bir sanat, hem de bir bilim olarak tanımanan sosyal hizmet, bütün insanların yaşam kalitesini geliştirmeyi amaçlayan insani hizmet mesleklerinden biridir. Sosyal hizmetin insanların sosyal işlevselliği üzerindeki odağı ile insanlara hem yakın, hem de uzak çevreleriyle daha etkin bir şekilde etkileşim kurmalarına yardımcı olur.

Sağlık alanında sosyal hizmet, geçen yüzyılın başından itibaren yer almaya başlamıştır. Bu güne kadar geçen süre içinde, bu alanda çalışan sosyal hizmet uzmanları sağlık hizmetlerinin tamamlayıcısı ve destekleyicisi olmuştur.

Psikiyatride sosyal hizmetin ilgi odağı ruhsal bozuklukların toplumsal bağlamı ve toplumsal sonuçları ile bunlar üzerinedir. Sosyal hizmet uygulamasının amacı bireyin, ailenin ve toplumun iyilik durumunun onarılması, her bireyin güçlü yönlerinin desteklenmesi, yaşamları üzerinde kontrol sağlamasına yardımcı olunması ve sosyal adalet ilkesinin geliştirilmesidir. Sosyal hizmet uygulaması birey ve çevresi arasındaki ilişkiler üzerinde odaklaşır; bireyle başlar ve ailesi, sosyal ilişkileri, içinde bulunduğu topluma doğru genişler.

Psikiyatri alanında sosyal hizmet, toplumsal bağlam düzeyinde bireyin ruhsal bozukluğunu şekillendiren toplumsal çevre ile ilgilenir. Sosyal hizmet bireyin kişiliği, örselenebilirlik durumu, dayanıklılık durumu, güçlü yönleri ve stres yaratan etkenler, sosyal destek ağı, kültür, toplum, içinde bulunduğu toplumsal sınıf ve cinsiyet gibi konular üzerinde odaklaşır. Aile işlevselliği, kişi-lerarası ilişkiler, ekonomik durum, istihdam ve konut ile ilgili çalışmalar yapar.

Sosyal hizmet ruhsal bozuklukların birey, aile, kişilerarası ilişkiler, ailesel iyilik durumu, ekonomik güvence, istihdam konuları gibi ruhsal hastalıkların toplumsal sonuçları ile ilgilenir. Sosyal hizmet ruhsal hastalıklar ve toplumsal sorunların keşiştiği noktalarda (örneğin, çocuğun, kadının, yaşlının, özürlünün korunması, aile içi şiddet) hizmet verir. Ayrıca sağlık hizmetlerine ulaşmada engeller, sağlık hizmetlerine ve hastaneye uyum sorunları, tıbbi tedavi planına uyum sorunları, karar verebilmek için bilgi eksikliği, gereksinimleri karşılayacak kaynak eksikliği, hizmetten taburcu olabilme konusunda engellerin ortadan kaldırılması için çaba harcar.

Son olarak ruh sağlığı alanında sosyal hizmet toplumsal adaletin gelişmesine katkıda bulunur. Bu bağlamda damgalama ve ayrımcılık, siyasal haklar, yurttaşlık hakları, tedavi ve destek hizmetlerine erişme, ruh sağlığı hizmetlerini seçme gibi konularda çalışmalar yapar. Sosyal refah hizmetlerinin daha ulaşılabilir olması, ruh sağlığı sorunları yaşayan bireylerin ve ailelerinin spesifik gereksinimlerinin karşılanmasına yardımcı olur.

The social work defined as both an art and a science is one of the human service professions aim to improve of the quality of life of all people. The social work helps the people to interact with their close as well as distant environment by main focus of people on social function.

In the health field, the social work has been take place since the beginning of the last century. From that time to nowadays, the social workers who work in this area have been both the supporter and the complimentary of the health services.

The main interest of social work in psychiatry is on the social context of mental illnesses and their social results. The aim of the social work practice is to increase the welfare of the individual, family, and society, to support the strong side of each person, to help in controlling their life and to develop the principles of the social justice. The practice of social work focus on the relationships between individual and his environment, it starts from individual and ex-pands to family, social relations and the society which he/she live in.

In psychiatry, the social work deals with the social environment which forms the mental disease of the individual at the social environment. The social work focus on the personality, the traumatic conditions, resilience, the strength and the stress agents, the social support net-work, the culture, the society, the social class issues, the gender, etc. Moreover, the social work focuses on family functionality, interpersonal relationships, economic status, employment and housing.

The social work is interested in the societal results of the psychological diseases and serves at the intersecting points of psychological diseases and social problems such as the protection of children, woman, elderly, disabled person, violence in family. Furthermore, it tries to overcome many difficulties like obstacles towards the health services, adaptation problems to the health services, hospitals and medical treatment plans, lack of knowledge for decision-making, lack of resources for meeting the needs, and discharged from services.

Finally, in the framework of the mental health, the social work assists in developing the social justice. On this context, it studies many topics such as stigmatization and discrimination, political rights, citizenship rights, achievement of medical treatment and services, selection of the mental health services. As social welfare services become more attainable, the specific needs of individuals and their families who have mental health problems may be supplied.
