Pierre Marty (1918-1993), a French psychoanalyst is one of the founders of the Parisian Psychosomatics School (IPSO) together with Michel de M'Uzan, Cristian David and Michel Fain. IPSO is a very important school of modern psychoanalytical psychosomatics. It was founded in the seventies and contributed to new psychoanalytical concepts, like operational thinking, essential depression etc. Marty reserved an important place in his theory to the thought that the pri­vileged way of psychosomatic patients to dissolve excitation by means of motricity or psychosensoriality. When the instincts cannot find a way to exit by mentalization, they can use the way of somatization. The patient who has a poor mental functioning, is also unable to sym­bolize, however he somatisizes easily. Marty also proposed a psycho-somatic economy of the psyche and a psychosomatic nosology.
