Bu araştırmanın amacı, meslek okullarına devam eden eğitilebilir zihinsel engelli (EZE) öğrencilerin ve ailelerinin özelliklerini inceleyerek eğitim ve öğretimin planlamasına katkıda bulunmaktır. Bu amaçla, meslek okullarına devam eden 13-20 yaş grubundaki 150 EZE öğrencinin ailesine mektupla anket gönderilip 82 yanıt alınmıştır. Verilerin analizinde yüzdelik değerler kullanılmıştır. Araştırma sonuçları, ailelerin sosyoekonomik ve sosyokültürel düzeylerinin genellikle düşük olduğunu, %75'inin çocuklarının durumunu 6 yaşın altındayken öğrendiklerini ancak eğitimin bu dönemde başlatılmadığını göstermektedir. Ana babalar, çocukların günlük yaşamında en çok çevreye uyum sağlayamama, arkadaş edinememe, para hesabı bilememe, duygu ve düşüncelerini ifade etmede yetersizlik gibi sorunlarla karşılaştıklarını, kekemelik, yalan söyleme, tırnak yeme ve gece işemeleri gibi davranışlar gösterdiklerini, en çok karanlıktan, yüksek sesten ve yalnız kalmaktan korktuklarını, spor, müzik, tamir-atölye çalışmalarına ve el işlerine ilgi duyduklarını bildirmişlerdir.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of educable mentally retarded (EMR) children who attend vocational schools and their parents and thus to contribute the planning of education. To achieve this purpose, questionnairies were sent to their parents of 150 EMR children who attended vocational schools and were between 13-20 [year]s old, and 82 of them responded. Percentage values were used for evaluation. the following results are found in the study: the families mostly come from low siocio-economic and cultural levels. Seventy-five percent of the poarents realized theri children's condition when the children were below six [year]s old, but the children almost never received any education in preschool period. The parents have stated their problems teheir children face in daily life as follows: problem of adaptation to social enviroments and making friends, disability to count money, and inadequateness in expressing their thougts and feelings. The parents reported behaviors as; telling lies, biting nails, and enuresis nocturna in their children and described the children as mostly nervous, impatient, and conciliatory. They stated that their children mostly liked sports, repairing things and handcrafts.
