Intelligence Theories
The main goal of the present Is to examine the intelligence theories in a chronological order (historical development). Having deserved a place within the field of modern psychology with Charles Spearman's studies on intelligence, this subject has proved to be contemporary and various theories have been put forward by the scientists to explain intelligence. In addition, the developments in computer technology and statistical analysis have also resulted in developments in the studies regarding intelligence. Today, intelligence theories are classified as psychometric theories and cognitive theories. The two different theories have Spearman's two-factor theory as their origin. The psychometric theories arc an attempt to support Spearman's theories in the light of empirical data through statistical analysis, whereas cognitive theories study the cognitive processes within the concept of intelligence and the relationships among them. Psychometric theories consist of Thorndike's multifactorial theory of intelligence, Thurstone's primary mental abilities, Guilford's structure of intellect model, Vernon's hierarchial theory of human abilities, Horn and Cattell's theory of fluid and crystallized intelligence, Carroll's theory of three stratum whereas cognitive theories include, Piaget's theory of cognitive-development, Sternberg's triarchic theory of intelligence, Gardner's multiple intelligence model and Gustafsson's unifying model.
