Berggasse 19: Freud and Togan. Two Neighbors, Two Destinies and Two Political Perceptions
The co-operation between scientific disciplines should provide new ways of dealing with social issues. In that sense, this is a contribution of an historian to psychoanalysis. In the framework of the Symposium at Istanbul University on the occasion of Freud's 150th birthday, Freud was hosted by the Faculty of Literature where Togan, one of the founders of the History Department of the same faculty, had his office. This accident was really unique, because Togan was Freud's neighbor in Vienna in 1935. As a simple result of this neighborly en¬counter, a poem of Togan's mother, Ummiil-Hayat, which she had composed for her husband, aroused Freud's interest. This poem is mentioned in Togan's memoirs.
You said there is no other sweetheart to love
You had not loved anyone else, have you changed?
You are the one who had tasted my ruby red lips,
And the one who broke my seal
Are you a stranger, what is the meaning of this jest? (Translation by Paksoy)
What did two neighbors discuss about this poem?
