Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytical Psychotherapy
The aim of this article is to clarify the difference between psychoanalysis and psychotherapy. Psychotherapy means treatment of the psyche and by the psyche. In psychotherapy treatment is emphasized. But when Sigmund Freud described psychoanalysis, the goal of treatment was one of the three definitions of psychoanalysis, and not the only. Psychoanalysis is a research method, a scientific approach and also a technique of treatment. Therefore, psychoanalyst does not privilege the therapeutic aspect of the psychoanalysis. On the other hand, Freud gave priority to the neutrality of psychoanalyst in the session. Psychoanalyst has to be neutral against the totality of the pa¬tient's speech, also against his symptoms. He could not work for annulations of the symptoms. The goal of the psychoanalysis is to resolve the psychic conflict, and not to eliminate the symptoms. The new techniques of psychotherapy are necessary for some patients for whom psychoanalysis is not practicable but new techniques have to respect the psychoanalytical method, if they want to be called "psychoanalytical". The important points of psychoanalytical method are free associations, neutrality of the psychoanalyst and the setting. Freud accepted to mix some quantity of cupper, suggestion, to the pure gold of psychoanalytical technique. But the equilibrium between the quantity of gold and cupper is very important. Some recent examples of psychotherapy contain more cupper than gold, and it is not possible to qualify them psychoanalytical.
