In this article self-soothing skills in mother-infant relation are largely discussed. Although every human being uses self-soothing skills in their lives for some moments in order to reach calmness, it becomes repetitive, monotonous and automatic with psychosomatic patients. When the internal capacity of comforting oneself is lacking, the external self-soothing activities provide temporary relief from anxiety. Psychosomatic patients have characteristics such as poor metallization, insufficient preconscious activity, operational thinking and poor fantasizing. They also use self-soothing skills to reduce the excitation. Here the psychoanalytical psychosomatic theories on self-soothing are discussed and case examples were given in order to show how the insufficiency of the psychic apparatus of the mother influences the child to learn to soothe herself/himself.
