Work-Life Balance, Work-Family Conflict, and Work-LifeEnrichment: A Theoretical Review
The objective of this article is to explore the concept of work-life balance, encompassing its definition, significance,
applications, determinants, and outcomes to support the development of policies and strategies concerning work-life
balance. It provides researchers with novel research avenues in the domain of work-life balance and furnishes human
resources practitioners with a scholarly foundation aligned with the extant literature, all aimed at establishing a robust
linkage between theory and practice. The current article will also contribute to a better understanding of the global context
of this concept by evaluating work-life balance research conducted in Turkey along with the international literature. The
research method is a narrative (traditional) review. Furthermore, it explores the concepts of work-family conflict, which
represents the lack of work-life balance, and work-life enrichment, which signifies the mutually beneficial interaction between work and personal life. These concepts have been examined through various tested models, existing literature, and
meta-analysis studies. The relationship between these concepts, their importance, and their contributions to individuals
and organizations has also been explored. This review revealed that work-life balance is of utmost significance for both
employees and employers. Attaining work-life balance, reducing work-life conflict, and enhancing work-life enrichment
yield numerous positive physical, attitudinal, and behavioral outcomes (e.g., Allen, Herst, Bruck, & Sutton, 2000; Amstad, Laurenz, Fasel, Effering, & Semmer, 2011; Yildiz, Yildiz, & Arda, 2021; McNall, Nicklin, & Masuda, 2010). The
antecedents of work-life balance, work-family conflict, and work-life enrichment indicate that organizations can actively
contribute to ensuring work-life balance.
