Depresyonun değerlendirilmesinde-iki amaç vardır. Bunlardan birincisi klinik alanda majör depresyon tanısı koymak ve diğer psikiyatrik hastalıklardan ayırt etmek, ikincisi ise toplumda depresyon görülme sıklığını belirlemektir. Psikometrik alanda depresyonu ve diğer alt tipleri değerlendirmede geliştirilen ölçekler bu alanda en büyük grubu oluşturmaktadır. Bu bölümde yetişkinlerde kullanılan ölçekler üzerinde durulacaktır.
