Bu çalışma Multiple Sklerozlu hastaların yaşadıkları cinsel sorunlar ve hastaların bu sorunlarla ilgili duygu ve düşüncelerini derinlemesine incelemek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Multiple Skleroz ile meydana gelen nörolojik değişiklikler günlük yaşam aktivitelerden biri olan cinsel yaşamı etkiler. MS’in neden olduğu bütün bulgular sağlık profesyonelleri ile tartışılırken cinsel fonksiyonlar üzerinde durulmamaktadır. Oysaki MS hastaların cinsel yaşamlarını olumsuz yönde etkilemektedir. Veriler 21 (12 kadın, 9 erkek) multiple skleroz hastası ile birebir derinlemesine görüşmeler yapılarak toplanmıştır. Bu görüşmeler teyp kaydına alınmıştır. Verilerin analizi ortalama, yüzdelik oranlar ve n’vivo ile yapılmıştır. Hastalık sonrası MS’li hastaların %66.6’sının cinsel sorunlar yaşadığı, %85.8’inin bunu bir sağlık profesyoneli ile paylaşmadığı saptanmıştır. MS’ li hastalar ile derinlemesine görüşmeler sonucunda; cinsel fonksiyon bozuklukları ile bu fonksiyon bozukluklarına bağlı olarak beden imajlarının bozulduğu, üreme yeteneklerini kaybetme korkusu yaşadıkları, benlik saygılarının azaldığı, eş memnuniyeti kaygısı taşıdıkları, eş olarak kendilerini yetersiz hissettikleri, terk edilme/kabul görmeme korkusu yaşadıkları, aldatılma korkusu ve cinsel yaşamlarını sürdürememe korkusuna bağlı olarak cinsel rol kaybı yaşadıkları bulunmuştur. Bu çalışmanın sonuçlarının MS’li hastalar ile çalışan hemşirelere hastaların cinsellik ile ilgili sorunları konusuna dikkat çekmede ve bu konu ile ilgili hastaları bilgilendirmelerinin önemli olduğu düşünülmektedir.

This study was performed to investigate the sexual problems experienced by multiple sclerosis patients and their feelings and thoughts regarding these problems in-depth. Neurological changes caused by multiple sclerosis affect sexual life which is one of the daily life activities. During discussion of all findings caused by MS with healthcare professionals, sexual functions are not paid much emphasis on. Whereas, MS adversely impacts sex life of the patients. This was a qualitative study and data was collected with in-depth one-to-one interviews with 21 (12 females, 9 males) multiple sclerosis patients. These interviews were tape-recorded. Data was analyzed using mean, percentages and NVivo. It was determined that 66.6% of MS patients experienced sexual problem after the disease and 85.8% of them did not share this with a healthcare professional. In consequence of in-depth interviews, it was found that body images of the patients were impaired due to sexual dysfunctions, they felt fear of losing reproduction ability, their self-esteem decreased, they felt anxiety of spouse satisfaction, they felt themselves insufficient as spouse, they felt fear of being left/not appreciated, they experienced loss of sex role due to fear of being deceived and not to be able to maintain sexual life. Results of this study suggest that it is important to raise consciousness over sexual problems by the nurses working with MS patients and inform the relevant patients about this subject.
