Herkes için ağır stres sayılabilecek, olağandışı fiziksel ya da ruhsal travmayla karşılaştıktan hemen sonra ortaya çıkan belirtiler için yeni bir tanı kategorisi önerilmiştir. "Akut Stres Bozukluğu" adıyla tanımlanan bu durum, ortaya çıkışı, tanı özellikleri, tedavi ve hastalığın gidişi bakımından bu bölümde gözden geçirilmiştir.
