İlk kez 1980 yılında DSM-III'te tanımlanmış olduğundan sonraki 15 yıl içersinde panik bozukluğuna (PB) ilişkin bilgiler ileri derecede artmıştır. Bu yazıda PB'nun tarihçesi, sınıflandırma sistemlerinin zaman içinde bu bozukluğa yaklaşımındaki betimsel farklılıklar, etyolojisi (biyolojik, psikodinamik, davranışçı-bilişsel), ayırıcı tanısı ve tedavisi güncel literatür verilerine dayanarak tartışılmıştır.
