Aileye yeni bir üye geleceği haberi ile ebeveynlerde beliren umut ve heyecan, çocuğun yetersizliğe sahip olduğu bilgisiyle yerini inkar, öfke, hüzün, umutsuzluk gibi olumsuz duygulara bırakmaktadır. Zihinsel yetersizliği olan bir çocuğa sahip olmak bir takım stres kaynaklarını da beraberinde getirmektedir. Bu araştırmada zihinsel yetersizliğe sahip çocuğu olan ebeveynlerin umut durumlarının belirlenmesi ve çeşitler değişkenler açısından karşılaştırılması amaçlanmıştır. Araştırmada veri toplama aracı olarak “Kişisel Bilgi Formu” ve “Sürekli Umut Ölçeği” kullanılmıştır. Araştırma grubu İstanbul ilinde ikamet eden, çocuğu zihinsel yetersizlik tanısı almış 155 ebeveynden oluşmaktadır. Araştırma verilerinin analizinde parametrik testlerden Bağımsız Örneklemler t Testi, ANOVA, Welch ve Pearson Çarpım Momentler Korelasyon Katsayısı uygulanmıştır. Araştırmada ebeveynlerin umut düzeyleri akrabalık durumuna göre farklılaşmazken; çocuğuyla başkalarının da ilgilendiği, ev işlerinde ortak sorumluluk alan, devletten sosyal destek alan, ekonomik destek almayan, eğitim seviyesi ve gelir düzeyi yüksek olan, çocuğunun yetersizliği hafif düzey olan ebeveynlerin umut düzeylerinin yüksek olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Yetersizliğe sahip çocuğun yaşı ile ebeveynlerin umut düzeyleri arasında pozitif bir ilişki vardır. Araştırma sonucunda yetersizliğe sahip çocuğu olan ebeveynlerin umut düzeylerinin yüksek olduğu değişkenlerden yola çıkılarak, çocuk bakımı ve ev işlerinde yardım alan, eğitim seviyesi ve gelir düzeyi yüksek ebeveynlerin umut düzeylerinin daha yüksek olduğu görülmektedir.

Having a child with an intellectual disability brings with it some stress sources. In this study, it was aimed to determine the hope status of parents with mentally retarded children and to compare them in terms of various variables. "Personal Information Form" and "Continuous Hope Scale" were used as data collection tools in the study. The research group consists of 155 parents residing in the province of Istanbul, whose child has been diagnosed with intellectual disability. In the analysis of the research data, independent sample t-test from parametric tests, Anova, Welch and Pearson correlation analysis were used. In the study, while the hope levels of the parents did not differ according to the kinship status; It has been determined that the hope levels of parents who take care of their children, who take common responsibility in housework, who receive social support from the state, who do not receive economic support, who have a high education level, who have a high income, who have other disabilities in their children, are high. There is a positive relationship between the age of the disabled child and the hope levels of the parents. Based on the research data, it has been seen that the hope levels of parents with high education and income levels, who receive help with child care and housework, are high.
