In the TAT situation, it's under the watchful, sympathetic eye of the clinician, that the person is invited to tell a story about an image he is looking at. The clinician transcribes his words, his silences and even his body language so that this written record represents an exact mirror image of the person himself. However, this takes place in a context in which patient and clinician do not really look at each other, even though the patient is relating his story to the clinician. Moreover, the test requires creating a story about characters who hardly ever look at each other. The patient therefore has to ascertain how the characters relate to each other, despite the fact that eye contact, one of the essential dimensions of such a connection, is absent. Such paradoxes concerning "looking at" as they occur in the TAT passation situation, are they not likely to create conflict in the individual being tested? Referring to psychoanalysis and drawing on their clinical experience, the authors explore the various values attributed to eye contact: from the modes of expression evident in eye contact between patient and clinician outside the story context to the patient's interest in eye contact as it appears in the stories, from a fixation on the eye as an organ to a focus on visual function, from the intention attributed to eye contact to its role in human relations. They illustrate their ideas with various sequences taken from TAT sessions with adult patients.
