İki uçlu mizaç bozukluğundaki cinsiyet farklılıkları nispeten ihmal edilmiş bir konudur ve bu konudaki çalışmaların çoğu
yöntemsel zayıflıklar içerir. Bipolar bozukluk kadın ve erkekte eşit sıklıkta görülmekle birlikte, hastalık gidişinde önemli
cinsiyet farklılıkları vardır. Bipolar kadınlarda depresyon ve hızlı döngü daha sıktır. Ayrıca hastalığın daha geç (yaşamın
beşinci dekadında) başlaması ve öforikten daha çok disforik mani görülmesi kadında daha sıktır. Kadının üreme döngüsünün
çeşitli evreleri yalnız hastalık gidişini etkilemekle kalmayıp tedaviyi de etkiler. Bu makalede iki uçlu mizaç bozukluğundaki
cinsiyet farklılıklarına ait güncel veriler tartışılmıştır. Cinsiyet farklılıklarının belirlenmesi, hem bozukluğun patofizyolojisinin
daha iyi anlaşılmasında yararlı olacak, hem de tedavide önemli ipuçları sağlayacaktır.

Gender differences in bipolar disorder have been relatively neglected and most of the studies regarding this issue have
numerous methodological problems. Although the illness is equally common in women and men, there seems to be
important gender differences in the course of the illness. Bipolar women are more likely to develop a rapid cycling course
and may be more likely to experience depression. Also onset of the illness in the fifth decade of life and dysphoric,
rather than euphoric mania are more prevalent in bipolar women. Female reproductive events not only affect the course
of bipolar disorder, but also influence the treatment in various phases of women’s life. This article reviews the current
data on gender differences in bipolar disorder. Identifying these gender differences may provide us with a better
understanding of the pathophysiology of this disorder and may have significant treatment implications.
