Temel sağlık hizmetlerinde depresyon tanısının nasıl oluşturulduğu sorusu önemli ilgi alanlarından biri olmaya devam etmektedir. Kanıt merkezli eğitim programlarının varlığına rağmen sağlıkçılar tarafından depresyon tanısı ve tedavisi kültürel ve gündelik kategoriler eşliğinde oluşturulmaktadır. Bu durum depresyon tanısının medikal bir tanı kategorisinden ziyade giderek artan biçimde 'sosyal tanı' kategorisi haline gelmesine neden olmaktadır. İlerideki eğitim programlarının hazırlanmasında temel sağlık hizmetlerinin pratiğine yönelik niteliksel çalışmalardan faydalanılması bu alanda depresyon tanısının oluşmasının anlaşılmasını kolaylaştıracaktır.
