Şizofrenide görülen bilişsel işlev bozuklukları hastalığın pozitif ve negatif belirtileri gibi temel özelliklerinden birisi olarak kabul edilmektedir. Şizofreni hastaları sağlıklı bireylere kıyasla pek çok bilişsel alanda daha kötü performans gösterirler. Bilişsel bozukluklar, şizofreni hastalarının psikososyal işlevsellikleri ile bozukluğun diğer belirtilerine oranla daha güçlü bir ilişki içindedir. Bu nedenle bilişsel işlevler şizofreni hastalarının değerlendirilmesinde büyük önem taşımaktadır. Şizofrenide görülen bilişsel bozuklukların tanı ve tedavi ile ilişkisi ise oldukça tartışmalıdır. Şizofrenide saptanan bilişsel bozukluklar şizofreniye özgü değildir. Benzer bilişsel bozukluklar bipolar bozuklukta da görülmektedir. Bu nedenle bilişsel bozukluklar tanıda klinisyene yardımcı olabilir, ama tanı koydurucu bir özellik olarak kabul edilemez. Bilişsel işlevler tedavi yanıtının değerlendirilmesinde ve hastanın takibinde de yardımcı olabilir. Şizofrenide görülen bilişsel bozuklukların tedavisi ise mevcut psikofarmakolojik ve psikoterapötik yöntemlerle ile sınırlı olabilmektedir. Sonuç olarak bilişsel işlevler şizofreni hastalarının tanı, tedavi ve takibinde önemli bir rol oynamaktadır.

Cognitive impairments have been considered as a core feature of schizophrenia like positive and negative symptoms. Patients with schizophrenia have demonstrated worse performance on many cognitive domains compared to healthy subjects. Cognitive impairments have a stronger relation with psychosocial functions of the patients with schizophrenia compared to other symptoms of the disorder. Therefore, cognitive functions have a great importance on the evaluation of the patients with schizophrenia. The relation of cognitive impairments to diagnosis and treatment of schizophrenia is still controversial. Cognitive impairments detected in schizophrenia are not specific to schizophrenia. Patients with bipolar disorder have also revealed cognitive impairments on similar domains. Therefore, cognitive deficits might be helpful for the clinician in diagnosis of the disorder but not accepted as a diagnostic feature. Cognitive functions would be helpful for the clinician to evaluate treatment response and follow-up of the patients with schizophrenia. The treatment of the cognitive deficits in schizophrenia has been limited with available psychopharmacological and psychotherapeutic methods. As a conclusion cognitive functions play an important role in diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of the patients with schizophrenia.
