Çağlar boyunca felsefeciler, ister bilimler ya da tıp gibi uygulamalı alanlar/uğraşlar, isterse günlük yaşamın ahlaki sorunları ya da siyasal yaşamda olup bitenler olsun, kendilerinde hep felsefenin dışındaki insan etkinliklerine yönelik olarak konuşmak hakkını bulmuşlardır. Bu tutum, felsefenin, yüzyılımızda özellikle Viyana Çevresi'nin yeni olgucu (neo-pozitivist) düşünürlerinin belirledikleri gibi, bir "üst-dil" (gerçekte bir "üst-etkinlik") olması işleviyle ilkece uyuşmaktadır. Ancak, en başta geleneksel, ussalcı (rasyonalist) felsefecilerin bilginin kaynağını insan usunda bulmalarını eleştirmelerine bağlı olarak, bu çevrenin ya da okulun izleyicilerinin şu saptaması da tümüyle geçerlidir. Felsefe etkinliğinin, bilim etkinliğininkine çok benzer biçimde olgular dünyası ile ilgili bilgiler, dolayısıyla, sözcüğün ilk, temel anlamında (empirik) bilgi üretebileceği, üretebildiği savı bir yanılgıdır. Felsefenin, söz konusu Çevre'nin de bağlı bulunduğu ve ilkece hep ussalcılığın karşısında olmuş ikinci büyük akımı ya da okulu olan empirisizme göre, dünya ile ilgili bilgimizin kaynağı dünyanın kendisi, daha doğru anlatımıyla oradan kaynaklanan duyu verileridir. Söz konusu 'çevre' ile eşzamanlı olduğu ve zamanımızın empirisizmi olarak geliştiği belirtilebilecek Mantıkçı Empirisizm, geleneksel felsefenin us ve insan merkezliliğinden çok büyük ölçüde kurtulmuştur. Bu akım, özellikle Hans Reichenbach' ın temsil ettiğini söyleyebileceğimiz Bilimsel Felsefe ile, kanımca bir doruk noktasına ulaşmıştır. Felsefe evriminde, empirisist felsefeciler arasında da etkinliklerinde ussalcı felsefenin öğelerini bulduklarımız vardır. Bu konuda bir okul, akım ya da al takım örnek olarak verilecekse, belki en başta İngiliz Analitik Felsefesi’ inden söz açılabilir. Bu felsefede, olgular dünyasına/duyu verilerine yönelik olarak yapılan felsefi/ mantıksal çözümleme ile sanki bilimdekine benzer bir bilgi türü üretilmektedir. Oysa bugün, olgularla ilgili dizgeli ve açıklayıcı önermeler üretme işlevi artık yalnızca bilim etkinliğinin sınırları içindedir; mantıkçı empirisizme ve bilimsel felsefeye göre, bu konuda felsefecilere artık bir iş düşmemektedir. Öte yandan, toplu biçimde etkinliği yürüten kişiler olarak empirisist felsefeciler kümesi ile ussalcı felsefeciler kümesi kesişebiliyorsa, bu, onların bağlı bulundukları etkinlik kümelerinin de ilke olarak kesiştiği, kesişebileceği anlamına gelmemektedir. Kişi ile etkinliği kavramsal olarak birbirinden ayırırsak, bu konuda bizim için aydınlık olmayan bir nokta kalmaz. Yine bu konuda bize ışık tutacak olan yaklaşım ise, felsefe de içinde olmak üzere belli başlı insan etkinliklerinin konu birimlerinin, amaçlarının ve yöntemlerinin, (onları yürüten kişilerden bağımsız olarak) ele alındığı temel yöntem bilgisi ("Metodoloji") alanından gelecektir. Kuşkusuz, yöntem bilgisi açısından kişi ile yürüttüğü etkinliği birbirinden ayırmak, tarih, toplumbilim, toplumsal-iktisadi etkenler, siyasal yaşam vb. yönlerinden de böyle bir ayırımın kolayca yapılabileceği anlamına gelmeyecektir. Şimdiki bağlamımızda bizi ilgilendiren konu ise, felsefecilerin psikoloji ve psikiyatri alanlarının bakış açısı, açıklama, üretilen bilgi vb. bize sağladıklarının ışığında görülmesidir. Daha anlamlı ve akademik açıdan sanırım daha geçerli olan bir nokta da, değişikfelsefe okullarına bağlı felsefecilerin kişilik özellikleriyle onların felsefe etkinliğini algılayış veyürütüş biçimleri arasında bilimsel olarak ne gibi bağlantılar kurulabileceğidir. Felsefecilerin psikolojisi konusunda yazılan kitapların da bulunduğunu biliyoruz. Ancak, bu konudaki yayınların çok sınırlı oluşu bir yana, ilgili çalışmalarda varılan sonuçların/genellemelerin, felsefe etkinliğinde yerine göre çok değişik olan anlayış, yaklaşım, yöntem, yürütüş biçimlerine ne gibi bir ışık tuttuklarının saptanması gerekmektedir. Her durumda, yazarınızın bilimsel felsefenin en başta gelen adı olduğunu düşündüğü Hans Reichenbach ’ın çok öz biçimde de oba vurguladığı, geleneksel febefecilerin psikolojik özelliklerinin kendi etkinliklerine nasıl yansıdığı konusu incelenmeye çok değecektir (empirisist felsefeciler arasında da belki en başta, çalışmalarında geleneksel felsefenin izleri bulunan düşünürlerin psikolojileri ve bunların etkbi). Belki özellikle geleneksel çizgideki febefecilerin insan yaşamının çok değişik yönleri üzerinde yüzyıllar boyunca görülmüş büyük etkileri göz önüne alınırsa, böyle bir çabanın salt akademik olamayacağı da açıktır sanırım. Yazarınızın beklentisi açısından be bu tür bir yaklaşım ve incelemenin olumlu bir olası sonucu, onun geleneksel felsefeye karşı duyduğu yöntembilgbel tepkinin psikoloji düzeyinde gösterilebilecek desteklerinin ortaya konması olacaktır.

Whether in the case of sciences or applied fields/professions such as medicine, or the moral issues of daily life and the states of affairs in politics, philosophers have apparently given themselves, throughout the ages, the right of speaking on human activities other than philosophy as well. In principle, this attitude is evidently in compliance with that principal function of philosophy which the neo-positivist thinkers of the Vienna Circle in our century have called "meta-language" (in reality, and better still, it should be called "meta-activity"). However, and in agreement with their criticism directed to the traditional and rationalist aim in philosophy that the source of our knowledge is the human mind, another and related observation of this circle or school is also truly valid: It is an error to daim that the philosophical activity can produce, in a way very similar to science, empirical knowledge as regards the world of phenomena, in the first ' and foremost sense of the term "knowledge ". According to empiricism, the second comprehensive current or school of philosophy with its constant opposition to rationalism in the course of centuries, and out of which the Vienna Circle developed, the source of our knowledge on the empirical world is the world itself or, truly speaking, the sense data originating from there. Logical Empiricism, which is more or less co-temporal with the circle as a sister philosophical school and which has developed as the empiricism of our time, has to a great extent got rid of the mind and man-centeredness of traditional philosophy. It seems to me that logical empiricism has reached a climax with Scientific Philosophy, which is represented, in particular, and in my view, by Hans Reichenbach. Among empiricist philosophers we find those whose work appear to have rationalistic components to this or that extent. Possibly, the best example in this regard as a school or current/subcurrent is the empiricism of the British Analytical Philosophy. It is apparently assumed in this philosophy that a kind of knowledge, similar to that of scientific knowledge, can be produced by means of philosophical/ logical analysis directed to the world of phenomena or the related sense data. In reality, however, the task of producing systematically the related explanatory propositions as regards phenomena in the (empirical) world is today within the scope of scientific activity only; according to logical empiricism and scientific philosophy, there is nothing that philosophers can do in this area today. On the other hand, the intersection of the set of empiricist philosophers and that of the rationalists at the level of individuals would not come to mean that the activity subsets to which they are respectively intersect also, as a matter of principle so to say. lf one separates conceptually the individual and the activity from each other, there will obviously be no point left unclear in this matter. And the activity that will shed light on the matter is evidently the field of (basic) Methodology, in which the subject matter, aim and the methods of principal human activities, including philosophy, are critically considered independently from the individuals who perform them. But the methodological separation between the person and his/ her activity would certainly not come to mean that the same distinction can also be made in the case of the history or sociology of the activities in question, or the impact of the socio-economic factors or political order upon them. And what concerns us in the present context is the consideration of philosophers in the light of what the fields of psychology and psychiatry can give us as outlook, explanation, or the knowledge produced in relation to them, and so on. The point which is more meaningful, and more valid here from an academic point of view, is the study of what sorts of scientific relationships can be found between the personality traits of the adherents of different philosophical schools and their respective philosophical comprehensions and philosophizing. We know that there are books on the psychology of philosophers. Apart from the fact that such publications are yet rather scarce, however, we must see what light the related conclusions/generalisations shed on their philosophical understanding, approach, and method, and their way of doing philosophy, which are sometimes so much apart from one another indeed. At all events, and with reference to a related point stressed by Hans Reichenbach, the foremost name of scientific philosophy in my judgement, it would be highly rewarding to study how the psychology of traditional philosophers (and, in addition, of those empiricists, particularly, in whose work we find the effects of traditional philosophy) is reflected in what they have produce as philosophers/thinkers. When we take into account the fact that these philosophers, in particular, have greatly influenced the different aspects of human life/societies throughout the centuries, such an effort should definitely not be seen as a purely academic end avour. And on the part of the present author, a positive aspect of such an approach and injuiry would be the confirmation of his expectations of support at the psychological level as regards the methodological concern he has always had about traditional philosophy.
