Yeni antipsikotik ilaçların klasik ilaçlarla karşılaştırıldığı birçok çalışmada, yeni ilaçların klinik etkinlik ve yan etki üstünlüğünün yanısıra, tedavi maliyeti yönünden de daha ekonomik oldukları sonucuna varılmıştır. Yeni antipsikotik ilaçlar hastane yatış süresini azaltarak, yeniden hastalanmayı önleyerek şizofreni tedavisindeki maliyeti oldukça düşürebilmektedir. Son 2 yıldır klinik kullanıma giren yeni antipsikotik ilaçlardan olanzapinin maliyet etkinliği yeterince araştırılmamıştır. Yeni ilaçların maliyet etkinliğini araştıran çalışmaların çoğu, araştırmanın ileriye dönük olarak planlanmaması, çalışmanın çift-kör yapılmaması, hastane yatış ölçütlerinin yeterince açık olmaması, az sayıda örneklem kullanılması gibi yöntemsel sorunlar içermektedir.

In many of the studies comparing new antipsychotic driugs with conventional antipsychotics, it has been suggested that novel antipsychotic drugs were most cost-effective as well as clinical efficacy and tolerable side effects than conventional antipsychotics. Cost-effectiveness of novel antipsychotics is the result of a significant decrease in hospitalization rate and a decrease in bed-days of hospital care. There is not enough study about cost-effectiveness of olanzapine which is onie of the novel antipsychotics because it has been administrated since 2 years. Studies investigating cost-effectiveness of novel antipsychotics have some methodological problems such as not being prospeetive and double blind, clearly undefined criterias for hospitalization or rehospitalization small number of subjects.
