Başka kültürlerde geliştirilen ölçeklerin kültürümüz için uyarlanmasındaki ilk adımı, iyi bir çeviriyi gerçekleştirmektir. Ancak taranan yayınlarda bu sürece gereken önemin verilmediği görülmektedir. Bu makalede maddelerin çevirisi, çevirmenlerin seçimi ve çeviri süreci ele alınmış, uygulama yönergesi ve test formatının uygunluğunun saptanmasının önemi vurgulanmıştır. Ayrıca çevirinin denetlenmesinde kullanılan başlıca niteliksel ve niceliksel yöntemler sıralanarak her birinin kuvvetli ve kısıtlı yanları tartışılmıştır.

Translation of good quality is an essential first step in adaptation of tests and questionnaires prepared in one laguages and cultures other than ones own. Unfortunately, the results of a survey on adapted instruments in Turkey suggested that in general, the information provided on the translations is not enough to make it possible lo judge its quality. In this article, general principles in the translation of items, choice of translators and the process of translation are discussed and the importance of test format and instructions for administration are stressed. In addition qualitative and quantitative methods to test the adequacy of the translation are listed and the advantages and disadvantages of each method are discussed.
