The Effect of the Situation in the Memory for Human Faces
The main problem of this study is: The effect of the original environmental
situation in the recognition and the remembering of human
faces. For the experiments, first, we have prepared two series of materiel.
For both series we took photographs of ten persons (Barber,
grocerer, driver, waiter etc..) while they were at work .
Then, we cut the faces of these people from the second copies
of their photographs. An d glued them on white cards of the same
size. In the third copies of the photographs we drew a circle round
the faces and cut out the circle, thus leaving only the situation on
the card. Finally, we took photograph of the same people in different
situation.
In addition to these series of material, we prepared 15 photographs
for each group, of different people to be used together with the
above photographs. A t the end of the test we put a questionnaire of
three questions.
We tested 190 subjects, 150 of which were tried in the preparotory
experiment and the remaining 40 were tested in the essential test. Al l
of the subjects were adults and had fairly good education.
We indicated the results in 26 tables, histogrames and graphs.
Some of the results are as follows :
— The recognition and the remembering when shown in the same
situation % 99.7
.— The recognition and the remembering of the
Portrait when first seen without the situation % 83.5
— The recognition and the remembering of the
Portrait when only the situation is seen % 71.8
— The recognition and the remembering of the
Portrait when first seen in a situation % 50.5
— The recognition and the remembering of the
Portrait when seen in a different situation % 41
The results we have obtained by using photographs as experimental
material are quite similar to those obtained by Gottschaldt using
geometric figures. It seems that.in order to be able to remember things
or persons with whom we are not well acquainted in various situations,
it is necessarry to see them again in the position or situation in which
we first perceived them.
