Depresyon tedavisinde trisiklik antidepresanların ardından, seçici serotonin geri alım engelleyicilerinin etkili bir seçenek oluşturmaları, depresyon tedavisinde diğer monoamin üzerinden, yani norepinefiinerjik etkili özgül geri alım engelleyicilerinin klinik kullanımını gündeme getirdi. Trisiklik olmayan bir selektif norepinefrin geri alım engelleyicisi olan Reboksetin, norepinefiin üzerinden etkili bir trisiklik olan desipraminden çok daha potent bir seçenek olarak geliştirildi. Bugüne kadar Reboksetin ile yapılan ve onu diğer antidepresanlarla karşılaştıran beş çalışmadan dördünde aktif karşılaştırma ilacı ile arasında etkililik farkı saptanmamıştır. Bu çalışmalar Reboksetin 'in depresyondaki etkisini tartışmasız biçimde ortaya koymaktadır. Ülkemizde yapılan, çok merkezli açık çalışmanın ön verileri Reboksetin'in depresyonda etkili olduğunu göstermektedir; çalışma verilerinin istatistiksel değerlendirilmesi ise henüz devam etmektedir.

The efficacy of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors in the treatment of depression after tricyclics (TCAs), bring the idea of an another drug, i.e. norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, which is effective on the other monoaminergic system. Reboxetine as a non-tricyclic, spesific norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, was introduced as a more potent alternative than the norepinephrinergic tricyclic agent desipramine. Four out of five studies comparing reboxetine with active antidepressant medications, including three studies versus a TCA, has revealed no differences between Reboxetine and the other drugs. These studies proved the efficacy of Reboxetine in the treatment of depression. The preliminary results of the multi-centered open trial conducted in our country with depressive patients, also demonstrated the efficacy of Reboxetine but the statistical evaluation of the study data is not finished yet.
