Among Bion’s early clinical writings, “Differentiation of the Psychotic from the Non-Psychotic Personalities” (1957) is his article where he succeeds to articulate his conclusions in regard to the psychoanalytic treatment of schizophrenic patients. In his effort to differentiate psychosis from neurosis, he points out that the excessive use of splitting and projective identification are characteristics of psychosis. Like Melanie Klein (1946), he situates the origin of schizophrenia in the paranoid- schizoid position. The patient’s sadistic attacks consist in splitting the ego into minute fragments and project them into the object. Thus, these attacks are directed at the primitive thought —the ideographs-, which precedes verbal thought, but also at the links that connect thought processes. Consequently, the matrix of thought becomes the object of sadistic attacks, preventing the linking of an object to another to form a new object. Thus symbolic thought is impaired.
