Halkın depresyona yönelik tutumlarını araştıran çalışmalarda katılımcıların büyük kısmının olgu örneğindeki ruhsal bozukluğu tanıdığı görülmüştür. Fakat katılımcıların depresyona yönelik tutumları beklenenden daha olumsuzdur ve depresyonlu kişilere konulan sosyal mesafe tatmin edici düzeyde değildir. Halk depresyonu aşırı üzüntü hali ve ruhsal zayıflık gibi algılamaktadır. Toplum içinde depresyonun nedeni olarak sosyal sorunları görme eğilimi çok güçlü biçimde bulunmaktadır. En olumsuz tutumlar depresyonun tedavisi ve antidepresan kullanımı konusundadır. Halk, antidepresanların bağımlılık yaptığına ve zararlı olduğuna inanmaktadır. Sosyodemografik özelliklerin, depresyonun kavranışı ve nedenleri konusundaki inançların depresyona yönelik tutumlara bir miktar etkisi olduğu görülmüştür.

In studies assessing public attitudes towards depression it has seen that most of the subjects recognised the mental disease described in the vignette. But the subjects’ attitudes towards depression are more negative than expected and social acceptance of individuals suffering from depression is not sufficient. The public perceive depression as a condition of extreme worry and mental weakness. There was a strong tendency among lay public to consider social problems as responsible for the development of depression. The most unfavourable attitudes towards depression are towards its treatment and the use of antidepressants. People believe that antidepressants are addictive and harmful. Sociodemographic features, perceptions and beliefs about the causes of depression had some effect on attitudes towards depression.
