Doğum sonrası dönemde kadınların % 70-85'inde ruhsal belirti ve bozukluklar görülmektedir. Postpartum psikiyatrik bozukluk olarak adlandırılan bu klinik tablolar postpartum hüzün, daha ciddi ve yaşamı tehdit eden postpartum majör depresyon ve postpartum psikoz şeklinde sınıflandırılmaktadır. Bu sendromların görülme sıklıkları sırasıyla ; % 30-85, % 10-15 ve % 0.1-0.2'dir. Psikiyatrik tanı sistemlerinde (DSM IV ve ICD 10) postpartum psikiyatrik bozukluklar ayrı bir klinik tanı olarak tanımlanmamıştır. Puerperal dönemde hızlı hormonal değişiklikler ve psikososyal stres faktörlerin bu ruhsal bozuklukların etiyolojisinde rol oynadığı öne sürülmektedir. DSM IV'te doğumdan sonraki ilk 4 hafta, diğer bazı çalışmalarda ise doğumu izleyen ilk 12 aylık periyod postpartum dönem olarak kabul etmektedir. Postpartum psikiyatrik bozukluklar klinik bulgular ve epizodik olma açısından daha çok duygudurum bozuklukları gibi seyir göstermektedir. Tedavide klinik bulgular ve duygudurum bozuklukları gibi seyrin göz önünde bulundurulması ve uzun süreli antipsikotik tedavi kullanımından kaçınılması gerekmektedir.

70-85 percentage of the postpartum women has mental disorders at the postpartum period. These symptoms are defined as postpartum psychiatric disorders including postpartum blues, postpartum major depression and postpartum psychosis. Postpartum psychiatric disorders are not defined as different clinical diagnosis in the whole psychiatric diagnosis systems (DSM-IV, ICD-10). The prevalence rates of these disorders are; 30-85%, 10-15 % and 0.1-0.2%, respectively. It is hypothesised that quick changes of hormones at the puerperal period and psycho-social factors are important in presentation of these disorders. The first four weeks of the puerperium according to DSM-IV or the first [year] after birth according to other studies is accepted as postpartum period. The clinical symptoms and the episodic nature of the postpartum psychiatric disorders are similar to the mood disorders. It is essential to concern of progress like mood disorders and to avoid long-term anti-psychotic treatment.
