Todd McGowan is one of the contemporary writers, who offers a new insight into Lacanian film theory. His main concern is to redefine the relationship between psychoanalysis and cinema, which has been degraded into ideological readings by early psychoanalytic film theorists. According to McGowan, it is necessary to return to the fundamental concepts of psychoanalysis which have been misunderstood, such as the gaze, fantasy, enjoyment and desire. Therefore, we need to reread Lacanian theory, only through Jacques Lacan himself, and not by other theorists like Foucault or Althusser. Me Gowan makes an attempt to interpret also the political, cultural and existential potentiality of the cinema in terms of psychoanalysis.
