Silence in Music and Psychoanalysis
Silence in psychoanalytic session has several meanings. The patient may think at the silencc of his childhood, its "infans" period before language. Childhood amnesia covers this early period of life. The structure of psychic reality is silent. If the analyst is silent in session, it is because he/she respects the psychic reality of the patient and his/her too. Silence guarentees the word, as stillness is action. This is why many psychoanalysts have thought about silence, Ferenczi, Reik, Green. Silence is also an indispensable [tart of music. John Cage made the music of silence, to emphasize that absolute silence does not exist. There is always something to hear, something to listen to.
