Psychoanalytic Training: A Difficult Transition
Training should help the candidate effectuate the transition between being in analysis and having to deal with being in the analyst's position. It is centered on helping the candidate become aware of the specific demands the analytic method make on his mind and the anxiety it can generate. What the candidate has to elaborate is not only the different aspects of his counter-transference while working with his patient, but also his "transference on analysis”. This paper gives an example of how a supervision helped a candidate become aware of the fact that a good part of his wish to become an analyst relied on his hate of analysis, itself a displacement of an impossibility to analyze any aspect of his negative transference in the context of a traumatic analysis. This paper also deals with the difficult and manifold task of the supervisor, the importance of addressing conflict in the supervision work and the complexities of the handling of transference in this context.
