Patolojik gülme; kontrol edilemeyen, duygudurumla uygunsuz gülme epizodları ile karakterize bir durumdur. Patolojik gülme santral sinir sistemi bozukluklarının bir çeşidi olarak davranışsal bir durumdur. Patolojik gülmenin altında yatan mekanizmanın, serotonerjik sistem disfonksiyonu olduğu ve bu sendromun geliştiği düşünülmektedir Tedavisinde başta selektif serotonin geri alım inhibitörleri (SSRI) olmak üzere antidepresanlar ve diğer psikotrop ilaçlar da kullanılmaktadır. Bu çalışmada, patolojik gülme yakınması ile başvuran 38 yaşında bir kadın olgu ve tedavi süreci tartışılmıştır.

Pathological laughing is characterized by uncontrollable, mood-incongruent laughing episodes. Pathological laughing, is a behavioural manifestation of central nervous system disturbances.The process underlying pathological laughing has been linked with serotonergic system dysfunction. Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) are the mainstay of treatment, but other antidepressants and psychotropic drugs have also been used in the treatment of pathological laughing. In this study, a 38 year old female patient with pathological laughing and the treatment process employed has been presented and discussed. Clinicians should remain vigilant for these symptoms, and offer effective treatments, such as antidepressants, where indicated. Further research is needed to delineate the underlying neurobiological correlates of pathological laughing and crying. The efficacy of both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions requires critical evaluation.
