Amaç: Ülkemizde yaşlı bireyler, sağlık hizmetlerinde ilk basamak olarak aile hekimleri, pratisyen hekim ya da acil tıp hekimleriyle karşılaşmaktadır. Bu çalışmada gelecekte yaşlı birey ile karşılaşması olası tıp fakültesi öğrencilerinin yaşlı istismarı konusunda farkındalığının değerlendirilmesi ve artırılmasını amaçladık. Yöntem: Bu çalışmaya 2011-2012 öğretim yılında, Cerrahpaşa Tıp Fakültesi öğrencilerinden katılmayı kabul edenler alındı (n=810). Bu bir karşılaştırmalı ve tanımlayıcı çalışmadır. Araştırmada daha önce çalışmalarda kullanılan anket soruları ile oluşturduğumuz bir anketi kullandık. Bulgular: Katılanların 356’i (%44) erkek, 454’ü (%56) kadındı ve yaş ortalaması 21.49±3.52 yıl idi. Öğrencilerin %68.4’ü bu anketten önce de yaşlıda istismar konusundan haberdar olduğunu belirtmişti. Yaşlıda en sık istismar türünün sözel (%37.7), ihmal (%27.8), fiziksel (%11.2), maddi (%11.2) ve cinsel (%9.0) olduğuna inanmaktaydı. Öğrencilerin %80.9’u bir sağlık çalışanı olarak yaşlıda istismarı bildirme sorumluğunun olduğunu düşünmekteydi. “Yaşlı istismarını bildirmeden önce istismarın gerçekleştiğine tam olarak emin olmalıyım” önermesini %7.4 oranında yanlış, %73.3 doğru diye yanıtlamıştı. Yaşlı istismarı için yapılabilecek standart prosedürlerin olduğunu düşünen klinik bilimlerdeki öğrenci sayısı daha fazlaydı (X2=22.53; p<0.0001). “Yaşlı istismarını benim bildirdiğimi düşünecek / bileceklerdir” önermesine anlamlı yüksek sayıda klinik bilimler öğrencisi çekimser kalmıştı (X2=21.97; p<0.0001). Sonuç: Yaşlı istismarı konusu ihmal edilebilmektedir ve bu konuyla mücadelenin yasama, sağlık politikası, medya gibi birçok yönü vardır. Yaşlıda istismar olduğunda ne yapılacağını bilemeyen geleceğin hekimlerinin bilgi, beceri, tanı koyabilme ve rapor etme eğitimi ile bu konudaki farkındalıkları artırılmalıdır.

aid. In this study, we aimed to evaluate and increase the awareness of elder abuse in medical students whom have possibility to expose with elder individual in the future. Method: In 2011-2012 education seasons, the students who have given informed consent from Medical School of Cerrahpasa were included in the study (n=810). This is a descriptive and comparative study. We have used an inquiry which we have formed from some questions in previous studies. Results: Among participants, 356 of them were male (44%) and of 454 (56%) were female and the mean age was 21.49±3.52 years. The 68.4% of the students have reported that “they were aware of elder abuse before this study”. The most frequently believed abuse types in elderly were as follows: verbal (37.7%), neglect (27.8%), physical (11.2%), financial exploitation (11.2%) and sexual abuse (9.0%). The 80.9% of students thought that “they are in charge to report the abuse in the elderly”. The 7.4% of them replied as “wrong” while 73.3% of them replied as “right” to the proposal of “I must be absolutely certain that abuse has occurred before reporting elder abuse”. Significantly more clinical clerkship students consider that “there are standard protocols to be done in elder abuse” (X2=22.53; p<0.0001). Significantly more clinical clerkship students were reticent to the proposal of “Families of the abused victims will assume that I am the one who reported the abuse” (X2=21.97; p<0.0001). Conclusion: The issue of elder abuse might be neglected and the struggle of this statement has many aspects such as legal, health policy and media. The knowledge, skill and ability to diagnose and report the elder abuse cases should be increased in the future clinicians from now on.
