Somatoform bozukluklar, hastaların genel tıbbi bir durumla, madde kullanımıyla veya başka bir ruhsal bozuklukla tam olarak açıklanamayan bedensel belirtiler yaşadığı bir grup bozukluktur. Somatoform belirtiler genel tıbbi bir durumla açıklanamayan bedensel belirtiler olarak tanımlansa da, biyolojik süreçler bu belirtilerin gelişmesinde önemli rol oynamaktadır. Endokrin ve immün sistemler, amino asitler ve nörotransmitterler, fizyolojik uyarılmışlık, ilişkili beyin bölgelerindeki yapısal veya işlevsel değişiklikler, genetik ve bedensel sinyallerin algılanma süreçlerinin olası rolleri üzerinde durulmaktadır. Bu süreçlerin daha iyi anlaşılabilmesi için bedensel sinyallerin gelişimi, filtrelenmesi ve algılanması aşamalarını içeren somatoform belirtilerin sinyal filtreleme modeli tanımlanmıştır. Somatoform belirtilerin oluşması ve algılanması, biyolojik, psikolojik ve çevresel etkenlerin karmaşık etkileşimi sonucu olur. Bu algılama süreci genellikle duyusal alanlardaki merkezi sinirsel aktivite ile ilişkilidir. Ancak algılamanın tetiklenmesi, artması veya azalmasında başka biyolojik ve psikososyal etkenlerin de katkısı olur. Somatoform disorders are a group of disorders in which patients experience physical symptoms that cannot be fully explained by any underlying general medical condition, substance use or another mental disorder. Although somatoform symptoms are defined as physical symptoms not explained by a general medical condition, biological processes have an important role in the development of these symptoms. The possible roles of the endocrine and immune systems, amino acids and neurotransmitters, physiological arousal, altered structure or function of associated brain regions, genetics, and perception processes of bodily signals are emphasized. To understand these processes, a signal-filtering model consisting of development, filtering, and perception of bodily signals is defined for somatoform symptoms. The development and perception of somatoform symptoms result from a complex interaction of biological, psychological, and environmental factors. This perception process is always associated with central nervous activity in sensory fields, but other biological or psychosocial influences contribute to either trigger, amplify, or attenuate this perception process. In this manuscript, biological factors that might contribute to the development and maintenance of somatoform disorders will be reviewed.
