Amaç: Depresyon özellikle sosyal bağları zayıflamış olan, yoksul ve yalnız yaşayan yaşlılarda daha fazla görülmektedir. Bu araştırma, evde yaşayan yaşlıların depresyon düzeylerini ve etkileyen faktörleri belirlemek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Gereç ve Yöntemler: Kesitsel ve tanımlayıcı nitelikte olan araştırmanın örneklemini Ocak-Mart 2011 tarihleri arasında ulaşılan, 65 yaş ve üzeri, iletişim kurmayı engelleyecek sağlık sorunu olmayan ve çalışmaya katılmayı kabul eden 179 yaşlı oluşturmuştur. Veriler; bireylerin tanıtıcı özelliklerinin sorgulandığı soru formu ve Geriatrik Depresyon Ölçeği (GDÖ) kullanılarak, kartopu yöntemi ile toplanmıştır. Veriler bilgisayar ortamında yüzde, ortalama ve ki-kare analizleri ile değerlendirilmiştir. Bulgular: Araştırmaya katılan yaşlıların yarıdan fazlasında (%73.7) GDÖ'ne göre kesin depresyon olduğu belirlenmiştir. İleri yaşta ve kadın olmak, düşük eğitim ve mesleki konuma sahip olmak, dul/boşanmış olmak, sadece çocuklarıyla yaşıyor olmak ve kronik hastalıklarının olması yaşlılarda depresyon durumunu artırıcı etki göstermektedir. Sonuç: Araştırma sonucunda birçok sosyodemografik etkenin yaşlıların depresyon düzeyini artırdığı saptanmıştır. Bu sonuç doğrultusunda yaşlıların psikolojik sağlığını iyileştirecek ve yaşlılarda depresyonu azaltacak çalışmaların yapılması önerilir.

Aim: Depression is seen more among the elderly people whose social connections have weakened and who live alone and In economically poor way. The present research was conducted In order to determine depression levels and affecting factors of the elderly people living in a region with low socio economical status. Material and Methods: The sample of the research which was cross sectional and descriptive was consisted of 179 elderly people who were contacted/interviewed between January 2011 and March 2011, who were aged >65, had no health problem that prevented communication and accepted to participate in the research. The data were gathered through snowball sampling method by using Questionnaire Form that covered descriptive characteristics of the individuals and Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). The data were assessed using percentages, means and chi-square analyses on computer. Results: It was found out that more than half of the participants (73.7%) indicated severe depression according to GDS. It was noted that the elderly people who were at an advanced old age, were female, had low educational and professional status, were divorced/widowed, were only lived with their children and had chronic diseases affects the level of depression. Conclusion: According to the results of the research, It was explored that many sociodemographic factors affected the level of depression of the elderly people. In light of the findings, it is recommended that initiative that will decrease depression among the elderly people and that will Improve their psychological health should be made.
