Bu çalışmada, haloperidol ve lityum karbonatın birlikte kullanımındaki nörotoksisite araştırıldı. Çeşitli psikiyatrik tanı gruplarından, sadece haloperidol ve lityum karbonat verilen 54 hasta bir ay süre ile izlendi. Bu hastalardan sadece 13'ünde (% 24) nörotoksisite nedeniyle tedavi programının değiştirilmesi gerekti. Bu 13 hastadan 8'-inde (% 14.8) tedaviye son verilirken, diğer 5'in-de (% 9.2) ise lityum dozajı azaltılarak veya biperiden eklenerek tedaviye devam edilebilmiştir. Bu 13 nörotoksisite vakası daha çok manik olmayan hastalarda saptandı. Nörotoksisite gösterenlerin sadece üçü manik olmayan hastalarda saptandı. Nörotoksisite gösterenlerin sadece üçü manik olarak teşhis edilmişti ve bu üç hastada da lityum ile tedavinin sonlandırılması gerekmemiş, ekstrapiramidal semptomlar nedeni ile biperiden dozu artırılarak devam edilebilmiştir. Araştırma sonunda, iki uçlu duygulanım bozukluklarında lityum karbonat ve haloperidolun birlikte uygulanımı emniyetli bulundu.

54 patients, with different diagnoses, on lithium-haloperidol therapy were followed up for one [month]. Only in 13 patients (% 24) therapy had to be re evaluated because of neurotoxicity. In 5 patients (% 9.2) reducing the daily dosage of lithium was sufficient But in 8 patients the combination of lithium and haloperidol had to be stopped. 3 of these 13 patients were manic. In all manic patients reducing the dosage was found to be the only needed measure for the clearance of neurotoxicity. It was concluded measure for the clearance of neurotoxicity. It was concluded that lithium-haloperidol combination is a reliable method in the treatment of Bipolar Affective Disorders
