Cinsellik yaşamın en önemli parçalarından birisi olup, yaşamın ölüme karşı çıkışı ve hayatın kalitesini artıran bir durumdur. Çocuk, cinsel aktivitenin amacı yada istenmeyen yan etkisi olabilir. Bu bağlamda kontrasepsiyon daha kaliteli bir cinsel yaşam olanağı sağlayabilmektedir. Şizofrenlerin hiposeksüel olduklarına dair kanıtlara karşın, psikotik hastaların cinsel yaşamlarının olduğu da bir gerçektir. Yapılan çalışmalar hastaların daha çok kaotik bir cinsel yaşamlarının olduğunu gösterse de şizofreniye özgü primer yapısal bir bozukluk saptanma-mıştır. Yapılan çalışmalarda kadın hastaların cinsel akt sırasında yeterli kontrasepsiyon uygulamadığı; cinsel birlikteliklerinde, muhakeme bozukluğu, davranış bozukluğu, cinsel ilişkiye zorlanma, tecavüz, bir şeyin karşılığı cinsel aktivitede bulunma gibi nedenlerin olduğu bulunmuştur. Bunların sonucu abortus, veneryan hastalıklar, planlanmayan ve istenmeyen gebelikler görülür. Hamilelik, hastayı ve hastalığın seyrini olumsuz etkiler. Doğacak çocuğun ebeveynin hastalığından etkileneceği aşikardır. Bu etkilenmede pek çok faktör rol oynamaktadır. Tüm bunlar düşünüldüğünde kontrasepsiyon, sterilizasyon ve etiğin rolü ve önemi ortaya çıkmaktadır. Dünyada etik açıdan cinsellik, ebeveynlik, kontrasepsiyon ve sterilizasyon konusunda fikir birliği yoktur. Şizof-renlerde cinsellik, kontrasepsiyon, ebeveynlik, sterilizasyon ve etik konusunda yapılmış çok az çalışmanın var-lığı, hastaların bu konuda kendilerini bilgilendiren psikiyatristlerin çok az olduğundan yakınmaları gibi sebep-lerle bu konuyu tekrar hatırlayıp, pratik hayata aktarabilmek için bu derleme yapılmıştır.

Sexuality is one of the most important aspects of human life, and it is a condition which defies death and inc-reases the quality of life. The child may be the object of the sexual activity or an unwanted side-effect.In this connection, contraception may offer a more qualified possibility of sexual life. Although there are some convictions that schizophrenics are hyposexual, it can not be overlooked that psychotic patients do have sexual lives. A primary structural disturbance specific to schizophrenia has not been established, although the studies carried out show that these patients have mostly chaotic sexual lives. In these studies the following are seen frequently: female patients not having efficient contraception, disturbance of judgment,disturbance of behaviour, to be the subject of forceful sexual intercourse, rape,sexual activity in return for something. As a consequence, there have been abortions, venereal diseases, and unplanned and unwanted pregnancies. Pregnancy affects the patient and the course of the disease unfavourably. It is obvious that the unborn child will be affected by the disease of his or her parents. A variety of factors play a role in this condition. When all these are considered, the role and importance of contraception, sterilization, and ethics become obvious. There is no worldwide consensus regar-ding the ethics on the subjects of sexuality, contraception, parenthood, and sterilization for the schizophrenics, and the complaints of patients that there are so few psychiatrists to inform them on these subjects have caused this study to be carried out to remind this problem to those interested and to realize the practical aspects of the subject.
