Batı ülkelerinde uzun süreden beri kamuoyunda tartışılırken, Türkiye'de ufak bir uzman grubunun ilgilendiği konulara kalan ötenazi (ölüm yardımı), Birinci Türkiye Gerontoloji Atlası (GeroAtlas) araştırması kapsamında ilk defa yaşlı insanların perspektifinden incelenmiştir. Cinsiyet faktörüne bağlı analizlerden çıkan sonuçlara yer verilen bu çalışmada, ötenazi ile ilgili birtakım yorumlar getirilmiştir. Araştırmanın amacı sadece yaşlıların ötenazi hakkındaki görüşlerini tespit etmek değildir, daha ziyade bu konuyla ilgili tartışmaların kamuoyuna taşınması gerektiğine dikkat çekmek, tartışmalara derinlik ve yeni boyutlar ekleyebilmek, toplumun tüm kesimlerinin bu tartışmaya katılmasının gerekliliğini vurgulamaktır.

While a topic long debated in Western nations at a public level, euthanasia (Physician-assisted suicide) in Turkey has been a subject relegated to debate among a small group of subject experts. For the first time, as a component of Turkey's First Gerontology Atlas (GeroAtlas) research project, euthanasia has been investigated from the perspective of the elderly. Based on the analysis of gender specific data acquired in the project, a number of observations have been presented. The purpose of this research is not solely to present the perspectives of the elderly concerning euthanasia, but to call attention to the need to bring deliberation on this topic into the realm of public opinion, to go deeper and bring new perspectives to light, and emphasize the need for people from all segments of society to enter this debate.
