Epilepsi sinir hücrelerinin aralıklı, aşırı, düzensiz deşarjı ile karakterizedir. Epileptik atak ise beynin bir bölümünde olan anormal elektrik ritminin paroksismal deşarjıdır. Epilepsinin kardinal özelliği bu deşarjların tekrarlayıcı olmasıdır. Epilepsi seyri sırasında dikkat, bellek, motor hızda defisitler, aberran kişilik özellikleri, anksiyete, depresyon, hatta psikoz gibi psikiyatrik problemler gelişebilmektedir. Antiepileptik ilaçlar interiktal ve postiktal davranış bozukluklarını düzeltmede yardımcı olabilmesine rağmen kendileri de kognitif disfonksiyona neden olabilir. Nöropsikiyatrik belirtilerin epileptik nöbetlerin her döneminde izlenebildiği bazen de ruhsal belirtilerin nöbetin tek bulgusu olabildiği bildirilmektedir. Bu nedenle epileptik bozukluklar hem psikiyatri hem de nöroloji alanında araştırmacıların dikkatini çekmektedir. Bu yazıda epilepsi hastalarında sıklıkla rastlanan ruhsal sorunlar gözden geçirilmiştir.

Epilepsy is an occasional and excessive and disorderly discharge of the neuons. Epileptic attack is the manifestation of a paroxymal disharge of abnormal electrical rythms in some part of the brain. If one adds that such discharges are likely to be repetitive, one has defined the cardial features of epilepsy. Sometimes psychiatric difficulties such as deficits in attention, memory, motor speed and aberrant personality changes, anxiety, depression, psychosis may be seen during the course of the illness. Antiepileptic drugs themselves which ceases neurobehavioral disorders could lead to cognitive dysfunctions. Neuropyschiatric symptoms may occur at the preictal, postictal and interictal periods of epileptic seizure and also sometimes one psychiatric symptom may be the only sign of the seizure.
