Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı, epilepsi hastalarının yaşam kalitesi, depresyon, anksiyete ve çok boyutlu algılanan sosyal destek düzeylerini değerlendirmek ve bunları etkileyen faktörleri belirlemektir.

Yöntem: Bir nörolog tarafından epilepsi hastalığına dair bilgileri içeren standart bir soru formu 139 epilepsi hastasına dolduruldu. SF-36 yaşam kalitesi ölçeği, Beck depresyon, Beck anksiyete ve çok boyutlu algılanan sosyal destek ölçeği (ÇBASDÖ) hem hasta, hem de 143 kişiden oluşan kontrol grubuna uygulandı.

Bulgular: Epilepsi grubunda kontrol grubuna oranla depresyon, anksiyete değerleri yüksek, ÇBASDÖ arkadaş boyutu değerleri düşük, SF-36 testinde ise 'a ğrı? alt boyutu dışında tüm değerler düşük bulundu (p<0.001 ve p<0.05). Cinsiyet, evlilik, eğitim, bir işte çalışma, ekonomik durum, nöbet sıklığı, nöbet tipi, nöbet zamanı ve kullanılan antiepileptiklerin sayısının bu testlerin bir veya daha fazla alt boyutunu etkilediği belirlendi. Çoklu antiepileptik kullanımı ve sık nöbet (ayda >1) yaşam kalitesini en çok etkileyen faktörler olarak gözlendi. Fiziksel duruma bağlı rol kısıtlılığı ve mental sağlık yaşam kalitesi ölçeğinin en fazla etkilenen boyutları idi. Nöbet tipleri içerisinde, kompleks parsiyel sekonder jeneralize nöbetler yaşam kalitesi, depresyon ve anksiyete ile ilişkili saptandı.

Sonuç: Bu çalışma sonuçları epilepsi hastalarında depresyon ve anksiyete düzeylerinin yüksek, arkadaş desteğinin yetersiz olduğunu ve yaşam kalitelerinin oldukça etkilendiğini göstermiştir. Ayrıca daha az ilaç kullanarak sağlanacak nöbet kontrolünün yaşam kalitesini arttırıcı en önemli faktör olduğu sonucuna varılmıştır. Epilepsi hastalarının yaşam kalitelerinin ölçülmesi hem hastalığı daha iyi tanımamıza yardım edecek, hem de tedavi yanıtlarının daha iyi değerlendirilmesini sağlayacaktır.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the level of quality of life (QOL), depression, anxiety and multidimensional scale of perceived social support (MSPSS) of patients with epilepsy and the effects of sociodemographic variables and clinical features of the disease on these parameters.

Method: We identified 139 epilepsy patients and an interview was performed by a neurologist with the use of a standardized questionnaire, which included data pertaining to seizure characteristics. The SF-36 health survey, Beck depression, Beck anxiety and MSPSS tests were administered to patients and 143 control subjects.

Results: In epilepsy group, depression and anxiety scores were higher, friend scores in MSPSS were lower and all scores except ?pain? in SF-36 test were lower than controls (p<0.001 and p<0.05). We found that gender, marriage, education, employment status, economic status, seizure frequency, seizure type, seizure time and the number of antiepileptic drugs affected one or more subscales of the tests. Multi antiepileptic drugs and frequent seizures (> 1 per [month]) were the most important factors in explaining lower QOL. Role limitations, because of physical health problems and mental health, were the most affected subscales of QOL. Among all seizure types, the complex partial secondary generalized seizure was detected to be most associated with lower QOL, depression and anxiety.

Conclusion: The results of the study showed high levels of depression and anxiety, insufficient friend support and fairly affected quality of life in epilepsy patients. In addition, we conclude that seizure control with fewer drugs is the most important factor to enhance quality of life. Assessing quality of life in epilepsy patients will provide better understanding of the disease and will improve the evaluation of the therapy response. Although many factors are affecting the quality of life of epilepsy patients, successful seizure control with less drug treatment may help to provide better life for the patients.
