In Narcissistic Personality Disorder, the person feels like a highly important and unique being, is in
need of being admired and lacks empathy towards others. Particularly, Object Relations and Self-
Psychology theories have contributed immensely in understanding and treatment of psychological
processes in this disorder. In both theories, it is emphasized that impaired or insufficient parent-infant
relationships during early childhood contributes to formation of this disorder. Not only the parent
fails to attend to the infant's needs peculiar to the developmental phase, but also abuses the infant.
The child then starts using some primitive defense mechanisms in order to survive in this kind of an
environment. His life and interaction with others is composed of maladaptive behavior repertoire that
he formed as a reaction to the helplessness he learned during early childhood. This paper reviews
Narcissistic Personality Disorder in the context of Object Relations and Self-Psychology Theories.

Narsisistik kisilik bozuklugu; çok önemli, üstün ve esi bulunmaz birisi olduguna iliskin yaygin bir duygu,
begenilme gereksinimi ve esduyum yapamama ile belirli bir kisilik bozuklugudur. Özellikle Nesne
Iliskileri ve Kendilik Psikolojisi Kuramlari, bu bozuklugun olusumundaki ruhsal süreçlerin anlasilmasi
ve tedavisi konusunda önemli katkilar saglamistir. Her iki kuramda vurgulanan nokta, yasamin erken
evrelerinde ebeveyn-çocuk iliskisindeki bozukluk ya da yetersizligin bir ürünü oldugudur. Ebeveyn;
gelisim evresine özgü gereksinimlerini karsilamak bir yana çocugunu kötüye kullanir. Böylesi bir
ebeveynle birlikte büyümek zorunda kalan çocuk, ilkel bazi savunma düzenekleri kullanarak yasamda
kalabilme çabasi içine girer. Güncel yasami ve etkilesim biçimi, çocukluk döneminde çaresiz birakildigi
kosullara karsi gelistirdigi ilkel ve uyum bozucu davranis dagarcigindan olusur. Bu yazi, narsisistik kisilik
bozuklugunun yapisi ve olusumu ile ilgili temel kavramlari, ilgili kuramlarin açiklamalari baglaminda ele
almaktadir.
