Amaç: Ruh sağlığı hastanelerinde çalışan hemşirelerin şizofreniye bakış açılarını ve tutumlarını belirlemek ve psikiyatrik hastalıklara sahip olan kişilerle daha az ilişkisi olan genel hastanelerde çalışan hemşirelerin tutumlarıyla karşılaştırmaktır.
Yöntem: Ruh sağlığı hastanesi olarak seçilen Bakırköy Ruh ve Sinir Hastalıkları Hastanesi'nden 70, genel hastane olarak seçilen Şişli Etfal Hastanesi'nden 30 olmak üzere toplam 100 hemşire ile yüz yüze görüşme yapılmış ve deneklere Parem tarafından geliştirilmiş, 4 ayrı bölüm ve 111 sorudan oluşan bir anket uygulanmıştır.
Bulgular: Her iki grup mesleklerini yaparken kendilerini güvende hissetmediklerini belirtmiştir. Ancak, Bakırköy grubu mesleki açıdan daha az tatmin olduğunu bildirmiştir. İki grup da şizofreniyi bir hastalık olarak değerlendirmekle birlikte Şişli grubu şizofreninin daha az oranda bir akıl hastalığı olduğunu düşünmekte, şizofreniyi aşırı üzüntü hali olarak görmekte, sosyal sorunlar nedeniyle ortaya çıktığını belirtmekte ve zaman zaman her insanın içine düştüğü bir durum olarak değerlendirmektedir. Bakırköy grubu şizofrenleri anlamlı derecede tehlikeli bulmakta ve daha fazla oranda düzelmeyeceklerini düşünmektedir. Ayrıca Bakırköy grubunun şizofreni hastalarına karşı daha fazla mesafe koyucu bir tutum sergiledikleri, bu mesafe koyucu tutumun özellikle şizofrenlerle evlenme ve evini bir şizofrene kiraya verme konusunda daha belirgin bir hal aldığı belirlenmiştir.
Sonuç: Ruh sağlığı alanında çalışan Bakırköy grubu hemşirelerinin şizofreni hastalarına daha fazla mesafe koyduğu, genel hastane hemşire populasyonunu temsil eden Şişli grubunun ise şizofreni konusunda daha az bilgili olduğu saptanmıştır. Bu nedenle Şişli grubunun bilgilendirici eğitime, Bakırköy grubunun ise tutumla ilgili eğitime ihtiyaçları olduğu düşünülmüştür.

Objective: In this study, it is aimed to determine and compare mental health nurses' and general hospital nurses' beliefs and knowledge about the etiology and treatment of schizophrenia and attitudes towards schizophrenic patients.
Method: 70 nurses working in a mental health hospital and 30 nurses working in a general hospital were interviewed face to face with a questionnaire developed by Psyciatric Research and Education Center in Turkey.
Results: The mean age and the mean working [year] was higher in the mental health nurse group. Both groups were nonsatisfied with their job but, the difference was more marked in the mental health nurse group. Both groups think schizophrenia as a disorder but, the general hospital nurse group consider schizophrenia less as a mental disorder and thinks that stressful life events commonly cause schizophrenia. Both groups consider schizophrenia as a treatable illness but, the mental health nurse group is convinced that schizophrenia cannot be completely cured. In contrast general hospital nurse group believe that schizophrenia will improve if social problems are resolved. The mental health nurse group hold the opinion that people with schizophrenia are dangerous and they put more social distance towards schizophrenic patients than the general hospital group.
Conclusion: The mental health nurse group appeared to have more knowledge about the etiology and treatment of schizophrenia but, they tended to put more social distance towards schizophrenic patients than the general hospital nurse group. This may indicate a need for an educational programme considering attitudes for the mental health nurse group and a theoretical educational programmme for the general hospital nurse group.
