Günümüz tıbbında teknolojinin gelişmesiyle birlikte kronik hastalıklar konusunda elde edilen başarı hastaları daha uzun süreli olarak hastalıklarıyla birlikte yaşamaya zorlamaktadır. Bu çerçevede sağlık parametreleri de biyolojik göstergelerden psikososyal göstergelere doğru kaymaktadır. Böylece yaşam kalitesi gündelik uygulamaya girmiştir. Yaşam kalitesinin en iyi tanımı bireyin yaşamdan bekledikleri ile elde ettikleri ya da gerçekleştirdikleri arasındaki farklılık düzeyidir. Yaşam kalitesinin bileşenleri arasında ruhsal işlevler, sosyal işlevler, fiziksel işlevler ve hastalık ve/veya tedavisi ile ilişkili belirti ve bulgular bulunmaktadır. Yaşam kalitesi hem hastayı daha bütüncül ele almada hem de hasta-hekim ilişkisini güçlendirmede rol üstlenmektedir. Böylece konsültasyon-liyezon psikiyatrisi ile benzerlik göstermektedir.

In current medical practice, with growing technology, the achievement in the treatment of chronic diseases enforces the patients to live with their diseases for a more long time. Therefore, the health parameters shift from biological markers to psychosocial markers. Thus, quality of life is presented in the daily medical practice. The best description of quality of life is the difference of an individual of what he/she expects from life and of what he/she realizes. The components of quality of life are psychological functions, social functions, physical functions, and symptoms and signs related to the disease and/or its treatment. Quality of life has a role of formulating the patient in a holistic way and enhancing the doctor-patient relationship. In this context, it has many common features with consultation-liaison psychiatry.
