Alkol bağımlılığının başlamasında, sürdürülmesinde ve nükslerinde (relaps) stres oluşturucu etkenlerin önemli bir rol oynadığı bilinir. Stres alkol alınmasını artırıcı bir etki göstermekte ve alkol bağımlılığının sürmesinde önemli nedenlerden birisi olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Bunun dışında alkolün sürekli alımının ya da alkol yoksunluk dönemlerinin zaman içinde oluşturduğu nöral adaptasyonun bir sonucu olarak, strese cevap sisteminde de önemli değişiklikler olmakta ve bu şekilde kişinin stresle başa çıkma yeteneği bozulmaktadır. Bu nedenle CRH ya da glukokortikoid antagonistleri gibi strese cevap sistemini etkileyebilen tedavi yöntemleri alkol bağımlılığının tedavisinde ümit vaat etmektedir. Bu gözden geçirme yazısında bu konular ele alınacaktır.

It is well-known that stress has an important role in the initiation, continuation and relapses of alcohol dependence. Stress has an enhancing effect on alcohol consuming behavior, and is an
important factor in the continuation of alcoholism. Furthermore, as a result of the neural adaptation due to chronic alcohol use or to alcohol withdrawal periods, important changes in the stress response system take place, and in turn, coping skills against stress of the individual are disturbed. Thus, new therapeutic methods which are involved in the stress response system, such as corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH) antagonists or glucocorticoid antagonists, offer new hopes in the treatment of alcoholism. These issues will be reviewed in this article.
