Birçok çalışmada alkolün zararlı etkileri için beynin önemli bir hedef organ olduğu vurgulanmıştır. Alkolün hem beynin normal gelişimini hem de plastisiteyi değiştirdiği gösterilmiştir. Alkol bağımlılığı öğrenme ve hafıza oluşumunun bir benzeri olabilir ve plasititedeki değişimi akla getirir. Kronik alkol kullanımının hangi düzeneklerle nöronal hasar oluşturduğu henüz ortaya çıkartılamamıştır. Ancak, artan bilgiler alkolün nörotrofik faktörler (özellikle beyin kökenli nörotrofik faktör, sinir büyüme faktörü), glutamaterjik ve serotonerjik sistemler ve hücre içi sinyal yolları üzerinde etkisi olduğunu düşündürmektedir. Bu durum ilgili literatür ışığında gözden geçirilecektir.

Many studies have identified the brain as a major target organ for harmful effects of alcohol. Alcohol exposure has been shown to both alter the normal development of the brain and affect plasticity. Alcohol addiction may be analogous to learning and memory formation and suggests enduring changes in plasticity. The mechanisms by which chronic alcohol exposure produces neuronal damage have not been established. However, increasing evidences suggest that alcohol interferes with the action of neurotrophic factors (especially brain-derived neurotrophic factor, nerve growth factor), glutamatergic and serotonergic systems, intracellular signaling pathways. This issue will be reviewed in the light of the relevant literature.
