Kanser fiziksel, ruhsal, duygusal ve sosyal yönlerden hem bireyi hem de ailesini etkileyen kronik bir hastalıktır. Yaşanılan sorunlar yaş dönemlerine göre farklılık göstermekle birlikte son yıllarda kanserli ergenler tanı ve tedavi sırasında yoğun bir şekilde ergenliğin getirdiği biyo-psiko fizyolojik bir çok değişiklikle de yüzleşmek zorunda kaldıkları için özel bakım gerektiren bir grup olarak öne çıkmaktadır. Kanser tanısı almış ergenler, bu özel dönemde hastalık sürecinde ve sonrasında depresyon, anksiyete, uyum sorunları gibi birçok psikososyal problem yaşamakta, yaşanan bu problemler ergenin tedavisini, hastalığın prognozunu ve tedavi sonrası yaşamını olumsuz etkileyebilmektedir. Hemşireler ergenlerin yaşadıkları güçlükleri ve bakım gereksinimlerini belirlemede ve müdahale etmede önemli bir rolde bulunmaktadırlar.

Cancer is a chronic illness that influences patients and their families with physical, psychological, emotional, and social aspects. The problems encountered in cancer vary from age to age, but in recent years adolescents with cancer have emerged as a distinct group requiring specialized care because of the unique and intensified biopsychosocialchallenges they confront during the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.Adolescents with a cancer diagnosis experience many psychosocial problems such as depression, anxiety, and adjustment problems during and after the disease process in this particular period. These problems can adversely affect the treatment of the adolescent, the prognosis of the disease and the posttreatment life. Nurses have an important role in identifying and intervening the difficulties and care needs of adolescents.
