İnsanoğlu var olduğu ilk günden beri sanatı içsel yaşantılarını ifade etmenin bir yolu olarak kullanmıştır. Bu nedenle sanat ve yaratıcılık bireyin kendini anlatma çabası olarak önemli yer tutmaktadır. Psikoloji kuramları da bireyin kendini ifade etmesinde ve kabul etmesinde sanatın önemini fark etmiş ve bu konularda çalışmıştır. Sanat terapisi; her yaştan bireylerin zihinsel, fiziksel ve duygusal varlıklarını iyileştirmek ve geliştirmek amacıyla sanat yapmanın yaratıcı sürecini kullanan bir alandır. Bu anlamda özellikle 1960'lı yıllardan itibaren gelişmiş ve ruhsal bozuklukların rehabilitasyonunda yaygın olarak kullanılmaya başlanmıştır. Bu çalışmada yaratıcılık ve sanat kavramlarına, psikoloji kuramlarında bu kavramların nasıl açıklandığına, sanat terapisine ve ruhsal bozuklukların tedavisinde sanat terapisinin nasıl kullanıldığına yer verilmiştir.

Since the existence of expressions of emotions and thoughts, art has been a tool to express the inner life and understandement of human beings. Thus, the attempt of explaining art and the creativity of the individual himself or herself has an important place for all of us. Psychological theories also have noticed the importance of art to express and accept and art therapy developing insight work on awereness and accepting psychological problems. Art therapy; is a mental health area that uses the creative process of art making to improve and enhance the physical and emotional presence of individiuals. In this sense, art therapy has been used for the mental health problems and has been used widely in different psychopathologies sinco the 1960s. In this study, the concept of creativity and art, describes how these concepts in psychology theory is given of how to use art therapy and art therapy in the treatment of psychiatric disorders.
