Psikoterapi uygulamalarında eskiden akıla ve mantığa hitap etmek ağır basarken, daha sonra davranışlarda duygusal yaşamın büyük etkisi dikkate alınarak duygusal boşalım (katarsis) gibi tekniklere yer verilmiştir. Bugün ise, yaşamda tensel faktörlerin oynadığı rol daha iyi anlaşıldıkça duyusal {sensory) ve bedensel yollardan da terapiyi pekiştirme çalışmalarının yaygınlaştığı gözlenmektedir. Böylece psikoterapiye yeni bir boyut katılmış ve bu alanda çok yönlü bir yaklaşım yaygınlaşmaya başlamıştır.

This article delineates the general course of practices in counseling and psychotherapy which in former times tended to take a logical and intellectual approach to the process. With the advent of Freud, psychoanalysis and psycoanalitically oriented approaches, the role of feelings and emotions were stressed as a reaction against the rationalistic and intellectual emphasis of the current psychotherapies. Recently, hewever, in close connection with the recognition of the role played by feelings, and emotions on human behavior and mental health; and with the contributions of some Gestalt and humanistic psychologists which emphasized the wholenes of person (organism) and dose relationship between mind and body, a prolification of so called body therapies are taking place as a third dimension in psychotherapy. Thus a multi-faceted approach to counseling and psychotherapy seems to be gaining momentum.
